Disabled Refuge (Type B) Outstations

Type B outstations are a specific type of emergency communication device installed in designated "refuge" areas within non-residential buildings with more than one storey, as required by building regulations. They are also known as "refuge points" or "refuge call points". Type B outstations typically consist of a call point, which includes a call button and a combined speaker/microphone unit. They enable individuals in a refuge area to communicate with emergency responders via a disabled refuge line controller installed in a central control room.

Type B outstations are designed to be used by individuals who may face difficulties evacuating a building in the event of an emergency, such as those with mobility impairments or other disabilities. They are usually located in designated refuge areas, such as fire-rated lobbies or stairwells, and can be identified by the international symbol of access.
